Neil returned to Greenbrier Inn that evening physically and mentally drained. His concern for Ada and Gwen, and the challenge of the hike up the mountain, had worn on him. He could have left them to themselves, but knowing Ada’s intention to follow Felix Zohlar’s trail troubled him. The mountain held dangers. And he feared Ada didn’t always acknowledge, nor prepare for, those dangers.

His aunt stepped out of the inn and stood on the front porch while he parked his car. When he arrived at the porch steps, she said, “Are you all right? When you left in such a hurry this afternoon, I became worried.”

“Everything is fine, but I am hungry.” He followed her inside.

“The guests have all eaten and gone to bed. I fixed you a plate. Come into the kitchen while I heat it up.”

“I’ll be right there. I want to wash up.”

When Neil entered the kitchen and sat down to eat, Aunt Gracie poured them each a cup of decaf and settled into the chair across from him. She smoothed back her gray hair, folded her arms on the table, and leaned in. “Well?”

“If you don’t mind, Aunt Gracie, I’m too tired to go into it tonight.”

“Okay, but are you too tired to hear my news?” Her pale blue eyes shone.

He drew a sip of coffee, then said, “Not at all. What news?”

“Kate Darby.” Aunt Gracie pursed her lips. “She and her daughter, Lauren, have registered to stay here the last two weeks of July.”

He paused his fork and crinkled his brow.

“You know. She’s the woman who left town with Harold Ramsey, the man who stole from the resort.”

Of course, that’s where he’d heard the name Kate Darby. In association with Ramsey and the embezzlement. “Remember, no one knows for sure the Darby woman was involved in the scandal at Stonecroft.”

She watched him eat. “But it is odd, her returning to Sackets Harbor after twenty years. There has to be a reason.” Gracie sipped her coffee then set down the cup with a glint in her eyes. “You could find out. You’re an attorney. You can interrogate her.”

Neil slid his empty plate aside and scraped back his chair. He shook his head and smiled down at her. “Good night, Aunt Gracie.”
